Interdisciplinary graduate program for ocean hazard mitigation and adaptation
이경은 교수 It is lovely to meet you all to visit the BK21 Four (Marine Disaster and Disaster Convergence Education Research Group) website.

Our Research Group conducts convergence education and research to foster innovative talents of Marine Disaster and Disaster Convergence. In particular, we intend to set extreme climate disasters, coastal geological disasters, coastal structures, and ecosystem disturbances as four key research areas and foster the next generation of future talents to solve related industrial and social problems.

It also operates a school-linked education program in cooperation with marine cluster research institutes, including the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, its top marine research institution. In addition, we intend to derive world-class research results and cultivate global talent through cooperation with renowned universities and research institutes abroad.

Here is our educational research Group that leads the future and vision of marine science and technology at Korea Maritime University. Thank you.

Program ContentHOME > About us > Program Content
Four Key Areas of the Marine Disaster Convergence Education Research Group
  • Extreme climate disaster: Heatwaves and ocean heatwaves caused by climate change, typhoon intensity/course changes, flooding caused by storm tsunamis and torrential rains, Neoulseong Goparang and Wolpa, etc.
  • Coastal geological disaster: Coastal geological damage caused by sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and fault zone near the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (sea fault, seabed slope conditions, and tsunami), etc.
  • Marine ecosystem disturbance: changes in marine life, such as the occurrence of red tide and invasion of foreign species
  • Structural damage: Coastal/port facility vulnerability, oil spill, landfill subsidence, and liquefaction
Curriculum management
  • Establishing a step-by-step Walk, Run and Jump teaching system for four key specialized areas.
  • Composition of basic subjects for acquiring basic knowledge related to marine disasters and improving the ability to think linked to industrial society and convergence subjects for interference between the four core fields
  • Operation the research-oriented credit transfer system, joint guidance teaching system, multiple degrees system, and long-term/short-term visit research program for marine disaster education and convergence.
Strengthening of research capabilities
  • Promotion of quality improvement of research through international joint research with world-class research institutes and universities on marine disaster and disaster, the core research field of this research and education team.
  • Conduct a convergence study in extreme climate disasters, coastal geological disasters, coastal structures, and ecosystem disturbances, which are the four core research fields of marine disasters.
  • Promote quality improvement of research results and results by organically connecting research contents and methods between fields through convergence research.
Internationalization of education and research
  • Promoting the internationalization of education programs in marine disasters through the overseas multi-degree system, semester-level student and credit exchange system established by the Campus Asia project of this university.
  • International Seasonal Semester (Summer School) expansion
  • Support for self-directed mid-to-long-term overseas visits for graduate students
  • Application of Overseas Studies in Marine Disaster and Disaster Areas
  • Attracting outstanding foreign students
